One in Four.

One in four women who experience domestic violence lose their lives as a result—a stark and harrowing statistic that demands attention. One in Four is a subversive exploration of this devastating reality, using the medium of ceramics to juxtapose the beauty of the objects with the grim truths they represent.

The project consists of four ceramic busts, each a delicate yet powerful form. At first glance, their aesthetic appeal draws the viewer in, but this beauty is intentionally disarming. It contrasts sharply with the uncomfortable subject matter, challenging the audience to confront the statistics and stories often hidden behind closed doors.

This work speaks to the complex nature of domestic violence, a subject too often silenced or ignored. By creating objects that are simultaneously alluring and unsettling, I aim to subvert expectations and provoke deeper reflection. The polished surfaces and intricate details of the busts symbolise the veneer of normality that can mask the insidious realities of abuse, while their material—ceramic—echoes fragility, strength, and the potential for breakage.

One in Four invites viewers to engage with this uncomfortable truth, using the medium of art to spark dialogue and awareness. It is a call to remember the lives behind the numbers and to consider the societal structures that enable such violence to persist. These works exist not only as memorials to those lost but also as catalysts for change.
